ABOUT THE MURAL

Detail from the mural City Life by Victor Arnautoff (1896-1979)

Painted in 1934
Located in Coit Tower
Dimensions of the original fresco: 10 feet by 36 feet

Coit Memorial Tower was erected in 1933 on San Francisco's Telegraph Hill. Its construction was funded by the bequest of Lillie Hitchcock Coit (1844-1929), a colorful local figure, "to add to the beauty of the city I have always loved." The architects' interior plans provided a public space to be used for displaying pictures, paintings and exhibits of San Francisco's pioneer days. However, instead of pioneer memorabilia, the monument eventually housed a set of murals entitled, "Aspects of Life in California, 1934," including City Life.
