All in a Day's Pleasure
Located at the northern end of the San Francisco peninsula, the city is roughly seven miles square. Its relatively compact size and an efficient and convenient mass transit system, including the famed cable cars, make it possible to visit several attractions in a single day. Here are just a few of the possibilities.
From panoramic views of the Pacific Ocean and San Francisco Bay to eclectic neighborhoods, distinctive architecture, world-renowned tourist attractions, quality dining and a wide range of fine cultural institutions, San Francisco offers remarkable experiences for everyone.
San Francisco enjoys a colorful history. Originally a Spanish mission, it later became, successively, a small Mexican outpost, the jumping-off point for gold-seeking '49ers, the center of '60s hippy counter-culture and, ultimately, a very cosmopolitan city. Surrounded on three sides by water, the city has a unique climate, with moderate temperature variances (generally between 60°and 80°). The months of May through September are generally dry, while rain is common in November through March.
